C. Barry Raleigh, Ph.D.,
Chairman & Co-Founder

C. Barry RaleighDr. Raleigh is an experienced manager of large research organizations. He held key appointments as coordinator of the Earthquake Prediction Program of the US Geological Survey and as director, Lamont-Doherty Geological Observatory, Columbia University, one of the nation’s leading research institutions. From 1989 through 2003, Dr. Raleigh served as dean of the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology, University of Hawaii, one of the top three marine research institutions in the nation with an annual operating budget of more than $70 million.  Dr. Raleigh received his Ph.D. in Geophysics from UCLA.

Mark Huntley, Ph.D.,
HRBP Co-Founder & CSO

Mark HuntleyA co-founder of HRBP, Dr. Huntley is a thought-leader in marine biological sciences generally and algae cultivation technologies specifically. One of the most frequently-cited researchers in his field, an organizer of global research initiatives, and an entrepreneur, he has been active in algae-related research and development for more than 20 years. He has held research faculty positions at both the Scripps Institution of Oceanography and the University of Hawaii. Dr. Huntley held a senior management role for 10 years in the GLOBEC program, a $300 million international program investigating the impact of global change on marine ecosystems. As an entrepreneurial CEO, he took Aquasearch Inc., a marine biotechnology company focused on the production of astaxanthan and other value-added products from cultivated marine microalgae, from start-up to a public market valuation of $200 million in four years. Dr. Huntley is skilled at organizing interdisciplinary R&D programs. Dr. Huntley received his Ph.D. in Biological Oceanography from Dalhousie University.

Edward T. Shonsey

Edward T. ShonseyMr. Shonsey has been the CEO and a member of the Board of Directors of HRBP since January 2008. He has an impressive record of executive management and leadership experience across several industries, including the industrial and ag biotechnology and agribusiness industries. Prior to joining HRBP, from 2005 to 2007, Mr. Shonsey was the CEO of Diversa Corporation, a public biotechnology company focused on the discovery, development, large-scale manufacture, and commercialization of industrial enzymes for a variety of applications, including ethanol, biodiesel, and other biofuels, where he led a highly successful strategic repositioning of the company and oversaw a doubling of the market capitalization. Prior to Diversa, Mr. Shonsey was the President and Chief Executive Officer of Syngenta Seeds Inc. / Northrup King, Inc. (formerly Sandoz Seeds and Novartis Seeds) where he led the launch of the first agricultural biotech product which was named global product of the year. While at Northrup King, he acquired and/or integrated nine separate corporations and was part of the leadership team that merged Sandoz and Ciba-Geigy (creating Novartis) and, subsequently, Novartis and Astra-Zeneca agricultural companies (creating Syngenta). Previous to that, Mr. Shonsey held senior level executive positions at Global Trading Resources (GTR), an international trade, customs clearance and strategic planning corporation he founded. Before that, Mr. Shonsey spent ten years at Pioneer Hi-Bred International, Inc. (now subsidiary of DuPont Corporation), where he served as Senior Vice President; Chief Financial Officer; Sr. Vice President, International Operations, Administration and Human Resources, and Business Development. Mr. Shonsey began his career at Procter & Gamble serving as an Operations Manager. Mr. Shonsey is presently a member of the Boards of Metamorphix Inc., Agrivida Inc., Ricetec Inc. and AG., and Liechtenstein Foundation, a conglomeration of companies for electric and wind power energy, agriculture, forestry, vinyards/wine production, and real estate for the Liechtenstein family. Additionally Ed served on the  international BIO and Business Higher Education Boards (WA DC), Chair of the Personnel Commission for the state of Iowa, and was decorated for combat operations in Vietnam as a Lieutenant, U.S. Navy. Mr. Shonsey has a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Marquette University and an M.B.A. from Creighton University.
